George W. Evans 1921 – 2014
Our brother George W. Evans laid down his working tools July 6th 2014. He will be missed by all.
Visitation will be on Tuesday July 8, 2014 from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson, Texas. Graveside service will take place on Wednesday July 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Houston, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donation are directed to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
GEORGE W ALTON EVANS
Eighty-fifth Master, 1956-1957
George W. Evans, longtime resident of Bacliff, passed away on Sunday July 6, 2014. In 1938 he graduated from Reagan High School. In 1942 George joined the Army Air Core. After serving our country he returned to Houston to run the Family Grocery Store. In 1949 George became a member of Gray Masonic Lodge #329. As a mason George served in several offices. In 1956 George became the Worshipful Master. In 1960 George was appointed District Deputy of Masonic District 30-B. He also became a member of the League City Masonic Lodge and the Blue Bell Chapter.
George is survived by his son, Joseph Evans and his fiancée Danna Jennings, daughter, Mary Evans Hoepfner and her husband Todd. Four grandchildren, Joe Evans, Melissa Hudgens, Kyle Hoepfner and Drew Hoepfner. Five great-grandchildren, Alyssia, Drake, Kaitlynn, Kollinn and Kellinn. Niece Linda Logan and her husband Jim.
George Walton Evans was born at Terrell, Texas, on May 13, 1921, the son of Joseph S. and Elizabeth Evans. He attended the public schools through high school. He was in the United States Air Force from October 18, 1942, to February 23, 1946, with the rank of Sergeant.
He married Kathleen Stephens on July 15, 1952, and they had a son, Joseph Walton, and a daughter, Mary Kathleen. He was a member of the West End Baptist Church and Fishing was one of his special interests. A successful grocer, he retired in 1962 and moved to Bacliff.
He received his Masonic Degrees from Gray Lodge in 1949 September 26, 20 October 26 and 30 November 28. He became Chaplain in 1951, then as Junior Steward, Junior Deacon, Junior Warden, Senior Warden and Master in 1956- 1957. He later served as District Deputy Grand Master of District 30B.
He was exalted a Royal Arch Mason on July 19, 1954, in Washington Chapter No.2 and was also a member of Houston Council No.1, R. & S. M. and he was a Past Worthy Patron of the BlueBell Chapter #856 Eastern Star.
Past Master Evans especially exceled in proficiency in Masonic Ritual. He earned the unique distinction of being awarded a Sixty Year Certificate in Ritual Proficiency. No higher honor can be achieved.
